Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of digital literacy, attitudes towards internet health information, and e-health literacy on health promotion behavior among adults. Methods A cross-sectional survey design was used. Data were collected from 260 adults aged 19 and older from two provinces. Data were collected from September 1 to 22, 2020. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results Hierarchic multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of the analyzed variables on participants' health promotion progress older age, better self-perceived health status, frequency of exercise (≥3/week), frequency of exercise (1~2/week), higher digital literacy scores, and no smoking history were associated with a higher degree of health promotion behavior, with an explanatory power of 37.0%. Conclusion Based on these results, in order to improve health promotion behavior in adults, it is necessary to pay more attention to younger people, those who do not exercise regularly, and smokers. In particular, as digital literacy was found to be a factor influencing health promotion behavior in adults, it is necessary to consider strategies that are tailored towards improving digital literacy in adults from all age groups and to conduct systematic education on digital devices.

PURPOSE To measure the degree of physical activity among breast cancer survivors and to identify how it was influenced by social cognitive factors, as defined in Bandura's social cognitive theory. METHODS A total of 128 breast cancer survivors were recruited for this descriptive study and answered the survey questionnaire. The collected data covered general characteristics, physical activity, and social cognitive factors, such as self-efficacy, outcome expectations, goal setting, and socio-structural factors (social support and negative impact of cancer). Data collection was conducted from July to October 2017. RESULTS The degree of physical activity among breast cancer survivors was moderate. The participants' level of physical activity differed according to their Body Mass Index (BMI) and type of surgery. Physical activity was significantly correlated with exercise goal setting, exercise self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and family support. Exercise goal setting (β=.55, p<.001), BMI (kg/m2) (β=−.21, p=.003), and exercise self-efficacy (β=.15, p=.040) were identified as factors influencing physical activity. CONCLUSION Intervention programs to increase the degree of physical activity among breast cancer survivors will need to consider various aspects, including goal setting, BMI regulation, and self-efficacy improvement. Repeated studies on the social recognition of breast cancer survivors and extended studies on health promotion activities are recommended.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between menopausal symptoms and decline in cognitive functioning of menopausal women with mediating effects of health promoting behavior. METHODS Using a convenience sampling, 140 menopausal women were recruited for the cross-sectional survey. Data were collected by using the Menopause Rating Scale, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile, Everyday Cognition, and Korean Mini-Mental State Examination. RESULTS The mean scores for menopausal symptoms, health promotion behavior, and subjective cognitive decline were 14.40, 153.79, and 67.40 respectively. Health promotion behavior was directly affected by menopausal symptom (R2=8%). Cognitive decline was directly affected by menopausal symptom (R2=11%). Menopausal symptom (β=.33, p<.001) and health promotion behavior (β=−.21, p=.014) were found to be predictive factors in subjective cognitive decline and explained 14%. Health promotion behavior had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between menopausal symptom and perceived cognitive decline (Sobel test: Z=2.05, p=.040). CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this study, developing nursing intervention programs focusing on decreasing menopausal symptoms and encouraging health promotion behavior are recommended to improve cognitive decline in menopausal women.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to describe the reported experiences of health management among twenty elderly workers living in urban areas. METHODS Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory approach was used to capture the meaning of health management. Theoretical sampling technique was used in the interviews. Using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, data were collected and analyzed simultaneously. RESULTS The core category was ‘pursuing health to take root in the workplace.’ Four stages of the elderly workers' health management were identified as ‘awareness of health changes’, ‘having the will to be healthy’, ‘utilization of health care resources’, and ‘reorganization of health habits.’ However, when the elderly workers reported limited capacity to manage their health, then two new categories were described: ‘awareness of health changes’ and ‘settlement with current health.’ CONCLUSION: To the elderly workers the concept of working was equated with being healthy. Further, the participants reported having a future oriented view of health and sought health to extend their working lives. The specialized intervention of health management targeting elderly workers in the settlement stage of current health habits should be provided.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between cognitive function impairment and quality of life (QoL) among patients with breast cancer. Specifically, the intention was to verify the mediating effects for promoting behaviors leading to better health and QoL. METHODS A purposive sample of 152 patients undergoing chemotherapy was recruited. A cross-sectional survey design was used. Data were collected using four instruments: Everyday Cognition Scale, Korean Mini-Mental State Examination, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer Version 4, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile. RESULTS The mean score for subjective cognitive decline was 65.84; the health promotion behavior was 95.89, and 83.34 for QoL. Health promotion behavior was directly affected by cognitive decline (R2=6.0%) as was QoL (R2=43%). Subjective cognitive decline (β=-.57, p<.001) and health promotion behavior (β=.37, p<.001) were seen as predicting factors in QoL and explained 56% (R2=56%). Health promotion behavior had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between self-reported cognitive decline and QoL (Sobel test: Z=-3.37, p<.001). CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this study, nursing intervention programs focusing on managing cognitive decline and promoting health promotion behavior are highly recommended to improve QoL in cancer patients.

PURPOSE This study was to develop a Health Dieting Competency (HDC) scale to assess self-rated health dieting competence of college students. METHODS The scale was developed as follows: items generated, and tests of validity and reliability. Items were developed through a literature review, review of instruments, and interviews. A panel of four experts reviewed the scale for content validity. Factor analysis, Pearson correlation, descriptive statistics and Cronbach's alpha were used to analyze the data (N=183). RESULTS In the preliminary stage, thirty-three items were generated. Final items were fourteen that were selected through exploratory factor analysis. The HDC scale was consisted with five factors and fourteen items that were Goal-Directed (5-items), Health Support (2-items), Health Self-Efficacy (3-items), Health Perception (2-items), and Escaping from Health (2-items). The internal consistency of HDC as measured by Cronbach's alpha was .78. CONCLUSION Content validity, construct validity, and reliability of the HDC were established. The HDC scale is a reliable and valid instrument for early adulthood youth who are willing to assess health dieting competency.
PURPOSE This study was aimed to examine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risk factors among workers at small-sized companies having fewer than 50employees in Korea. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a secondary data analysis on workers' health examination data. Data from 21,784 employed workers were analyzed, including 16,488 males (mean age 38.7years)and 5,296 females (mean age 40.5 years). Participants were newly enrolled in annual health check-ups at a professional health clinic from 2009 to 2011. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify age-adjusted gender specific predicting factors of MetS incidence. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was 13.4% in male and 7.7% in female workers. Logistic regression analysis showed that, when age was adjusted for, family history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) was a predicting factor in both male and female workers. For male workers, heavy alcohol drinking and non-manual occupation (office workers/drivers) predicted MetS. CONCLUSION Health care providers should screen for MetS periodically in small work places especially for those with a family history of CVD. Educational counseling needs to be given to male workers with sedentary occupations with an aim to reduce heavy drinking and encourage lifestyle modification.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the health-promoting behaviors of the people living with HIV. METHODS Descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. The study participants included 99 people living with HIV recruited via the Korea HIV/AIDS Network of Solidarity from May 15 to August 15, 2012. Self-report questionnaires were used fo data collection measuring perceived stress, depression, self-efficacy, health-promoting behaviors (HPLP-II), and the perceived health status. The analysis was done using SPSS/Win 18.0 program. Descriptive statistics, pearson correlation, t-test, ANOVA and stepwise multiple regressions were used for data analysis. RESULTS Perceived stress (r=-.21, p=.040), depression (r=-.37, p<.001), self-efficacy (r=.42, p<.001), perceived health status (r=.29, p=.003), and health-promoting behaviors were significantly correlated with each other. The self-efficacy, religion and perceived health status were significant factors, which explained about 26% of the variance of the health-promoting behaviors. Multiple regression analysis showed that a powerful predictor of health-promoting behaviors among people living with HIV was self-efficacy. CONCLUSION This study suggested that a focus of nursing intervention program on self-efficacy is necessary in order to increase health-promoting behaviors among people living with HIV.

PURPOSE This study was to describe the process of healthy dieting and develop a substantive theory that explains lifestyle in obese male college students. METHODS The participants were 11 students who had participated in self-dieting program in a health center. Data were collected with in-depth interviews and analyzed by grounded theory in Strauss and Corbin (1990). RESULTS Through analyzing process, 36 concepts, 18 subcategories, and nine categories were deduced. In axial coding, casual condition, 'shrinking themselves' and 'oriented to selfish lifestyle', context condition, 'distress in mutual understanding' impacted on phenomenon, 'making health with autonomous living pattern'. Intervening conditions were 'practicing with active measures' and 'growing the willpower' and action-interaction condition, 'devoting realistic plan with positiveness' totally lead to consequence in 'regaining social relationship' and 'pursuing harmonious sound of mind and body'. The periods of process were divided four stages, reflecting self-characteristics, situational copping phase, applying period realistic strategies, and developing phase of social relationship. The core category, 'developing communication competency' incorporated the relationship between and among all categories and explained the process. CONCLUSION The findings indicate that self leading health program helped to develop the communication competency. Therefore, we would consider about internalized motives and external incentives in health programs.

PUEPOSE: This study was conducted to compare self-rated health, health status, and health promotion behaviors between non-low income and low income elderly women in the urban setting. METHOD: The subjects of this study consisted of 668 Korean elderly women over 65years. The data was analyzed by the SAS(ver.8.02) computer program, and it included descriptive statistics, chi-square-test, analysis of covariance, pearson correlation coefficient and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: 1) The non-low income elderly women had significantly higher scores(self-rated health, health status, and health promotion behavior) than the low income elderly women. 2) In low income elderly women, age, number of children were the main effect factors of health status, and level of education, burden of medical expense were the main effect factors of health promotion behaviors. In non-low income elderly women, number of children was the main effect factors of health status, and level of education, level of pocket money were the main effect factors of health promotion behaviors. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the establishment of a health care system for elderly according to their social-economic level is very important for providing productive care apposite to the situation of elderly.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data of a comprehensive counter-plan to promote health for people by comparing various factors related to cancer outbreak factors including general characteristics, health-related lifestyles, health promoting behaviors, perceived healthy status, life event stress and health care seeking behaviors with cancer patients and health people. METHOD: The study was designed to be a retrospective- comparison-survey-study and its data was collected through 5 types of questionnaires from September 2003 to December 2003. RESULTS: Cancer patients had lower education and household income, and many of them had no occupation. Cancer patients had a higher rate of smoking and drinking periods. Exercise level was higher in healthy people. However, Cancer patients were better in sleep and rest. In comparison with health promoting behaviors, it was higher in healthy people than in cancer patients but the two groups had no significant differences statistically. The perceived health status was higher in healthy people than in cancer patients. The health care seeking behaviors were higher in healthy people than in cancer patients. Cancer patients and healthy people's life event stress had no significant differences statistically. CONCLUSION: As a result of comparative analysis of cancer patients and healthy people's health risk factors, smoking, drinking period, regular exercise and health care seeking behaviors were suggested as direct or indirect risk factors for cancer patients. These finding can be applied to health promoting behavior programs to keep and promote optimal health status as well as to prevent cancer disease.
PURPOSE To describe the performance in the health-promoting lifestyle and to identify the major factors affecting the health-promoting relationships between self care behaviors and health promoting lifestyle profile in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. METHOD: A convenience sample for this study was 172 pulmonary tuberculosis patients who have taken TB medications in urban city. The HPLP-ll was selected to measure the concept of health- promoting lifestyle because of the number of research studies conducted using both the original HPLP and the revised HPLP-ll. The statistical methods used in this study were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression. RESULT: The differences of the HPLP-ll were found to have a significance of age, marital status, education level, and health service center. The level of self care behaviors was related positively to the level of health promoting lifestyle and their subcategories. Based on stepwise multiple regression analysis, the model that predicted factors included self care behaviors, age, health service center and education. CONCLUSION: After decades of decreasing rates, TB has reemerged as a serious national problem in Korea. The careful clinical management and more national concern of TB may help to improve the outcomes of many patients. The findings of this study suggest that TB patients who are more fulfilled in health-promoting lifestyles and self-care behaviors may be able to make better decisions regarding positive health-promoting behaviors.
