Purpose This study was a scoping review aimed at evaluating Simulation-Based Education for recognizing and responding to deteriorating patients within Korean nursing school curricula, and at developing educational strategies for these competencies. Methods A literature search was conducted from April 1 to April 30, 2024. The review followed the scoping review framework by Arksey and O’Malley and the manual by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Relevant studies were identified through databases such as the Korean Medical Database, Korean Studies Information Service System, DataBase Periodical Information Academic, Research Information Sharing Service, ScienceOn, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Results Eleven studies published from 2010 to 2019 were reviewed. The simulations typically included several lectures and practice sessions on advanced cardiopulmonary life support before the simulation exercises, which were then repeated.
Cardiac arrest was frequently used as a scenario subject. The learning outcomes focused on the cognitive and psychomotor domains, as well as self-efficacy. Conclusion Although simulation for recognizing and responding to deteriorating patients was available in Korean nursing school curricula, it was infrequently incorporated as a regular part of the training. Future initiatives should include adding educational content to enhance nursing students' competencies in recognizing and responding to deteriorating patient simulations. Subsequent studies should assess the effectiveness of these educational methods.
Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the moderating effect of teaching effectiveness and students’ anxiety in the relationship between simulation design characteristics and clinical reasoning competence among nursing students.
Methods: The participants were 123 nursing students who underwent simulation practice. Data were collected from September 1 to October 30, 2020 using self-report questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and SPSS PROCESS Macro program (to study the multiple additive moderation effect).
Results: Significant positive correlations were observed between clinical reasoning competence and simulation design characteristics (r=.57, p<.001), clinical reasoning competence and teaching effectiveness (r=.49, p<.001), while negative correlations were observed between clinical reasoning competence and students’ anxiety (r=-.33, p<.001). Teaching effectiveness and students’ anxiety had a multiple additive moderating effect on the relationship between simulation design characteristics and clinical reasoning competence among the nursing students (F=15.10, p<.001).
Conclusion: The relationship between simulation design characteristics and clinical reasoning competence differed depending on the students’ anxiety. To improve the clinical reasoning competence of nursing students in simulation practice, developing interventions and techniques to manage students’ anxiety levels are important.

Purpose Intradialytic exercise could be a cornerstone of management in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intradialytic stretching training on Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and sleep quality among patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Methods: This 8-week quasi-experimental design study involved adult patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment for at least 3 months at the Drug Dependency Hospital Nephrology Unit in Jakarta. Nineteen participants were listed in each group, so a total of 38 participants were registered. Convenience sampling was used to select respondents. In addition, each respondent was asked to complete the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRSSG) rating scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Results: The majority of respondents were women (55.3%), unemployed (71.1%), with duration of hemodialysis>12 months (55.3%), and having hemoglobin levels less than 10 mg/dl (68.4%). The mean RLS before intervention was 1.74 (Standard Deviation [SD]=0.23) and after intervention, there was significant reduction in RLS score to a mean of 0.42 (SD=0.17) (p<.001). Similarly, mean sleep quality before intervention was 4.02 (SD=2.56) and after intervention, it reduced significantly to a mean of 6.16 (SD=3.18) (p<.001).
Conclusion: Intradialytic stretching training could play a significant role in decreasing RLS and improving quality of sleep. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longer periods of intervention are required to validate our results and contribute to better patient outcomes.

Purpose This study aimed to review the outcomes of nurse residency programs for new graduate nurses.
Methods: The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed articles on the outcomes of nurse residency programs for new graduate nurses published in English from 2010 to 2019. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, CINAHL, Science Direct, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases using the search terms "nurse residency program," "new graduate nurse," and "transition to practice program." A qualitative appraisal of studies was conducted using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2) and the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool.
Results: Twenty-five studies were selected. The systematic review found that nurse residency programs effectively increased the competence and confidence of new graduate nurses in 14 studies.
Job satisfaction, job stress and anxiety, and support showed different results, which were increased, decreased, or statistically insignificant after the programs. In three studies, institutional outcomes, including the retention rate in 16 surveys and hospital cost savings, were improved. Patient safety had different results depending upon the study.
Conclusion: This study's results can provide evidence for the necessity of a standardized nursing education program and for developing a system for evaluating its effectiveness to improve the quality of nursing education.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to verify the effect of simulation and examine the effect of within-team debriefing for cardiac arrest emergency nursing education. METHODS A non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. The participants in this study were 199 senior nursing students from one nursing school in Daegu, Korea. Data were analyzed using χ² test, t-test, Fisher's exact test with SPSS 22.0 program. RESULTS Developed simulation protocol in this study increased the learning immersion (t=12.19, p < .001, t=5.07, p < .001), learning confidence (t=−10.36, p < .001, t=−5.99, p < .001) and clinical performance ability (t=−10.88, p < .001, t=−3.84, p=.002) among nursing students. In addition to this, learning immersion (t=2.66, p=.008), learning confidence (t=−2.78, p=.006), simulation satisfaction (t=−3.15, p=.002) and clinical performance (t=−3.02, p=.005) were significantly higher in the experiment group using within-team debriefing. CONCLUSION The results indicate that simulation using within-team debriefing was an effective educational method for nursing students.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of simulation-based training (SBT) for basic life support (BLS) utilizing video-assisted debriefing (VAD) about non-technical skills (NTSs) and technical skills (TSs). The goal of the proposed study is the evaluation of a teaching method about the correct application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). METHODS The study design was a control group pre- and post-test non-synchronized experimental design. The sample included twelve teams of 36 nursing students. Both the experimental and the control groups received the SBT for BLS. Only the experimental groups received VAD where as the control groups had a verbal debriefing. Raters who used checklists for TSs and NTSs evaluated both groups. Data were analyzed by the SPSS 20.0 using Cronbach's α, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Mann-Whitney U test and Willcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS The experimental groups scored higher than the control groups in both TSs (p=.004) and the NTSs (p=.008). CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that NTSs are an important factor that lead CPR successfully, so VAD can be used as an efficient teaching-learning strategy in the SBT for BLS for nursing students and nurses.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to provide an effective nursing intervention using an individualized educational program composed with knowledge, compliance, and physiologic parameters for long-term hemodialysis patients. METHODS A quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group and pre- and post-test design was conducted with 40 hemodialysis patients at G university hospital in the J city from June to August, 2015. A data was analyzed using frequency, percentage, chi2 test, Shapiro-Wilk test, independent-samples t-test and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 21.0 program. RESULTS knowledge about hemodialysis and patient role behaviors were not significantly different between the two measures. In the biological index, there was significant difference between the groups by points in time and group in blood potassium, albumin, and Kt/v. However, there was no difference in gaining weight between hemodialysis, hemoglobin, and blood phosphorus. CONCLUSION The individual training program in this study had an effect on changing some physiological indicators of long-term hemodialysis patients. Future research is warranted for developing various kinds of education program incorporating the findings of the study for the given population.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the training effectiveness and behavior towards the elderly of 180 caregiver trainees. METHODS Data were collected from five caregiver training institutions located in G city. All subjects were surveyed about the training effectiveness and behavior towards the elderly by using the Training Effectiveness Scale and the Behavior towards the Elderly Scale. Data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. RESULTS The study subjects gained a training effectiveness score of 3.84 out of 5 points and a behavior towards the elderly score 3.40 out of 4 points. The training effectiveness differed significantly depending on subject's characteristics, intention to work as a caregiver, and hours of training. There were significant differences in behavior towards the elderly depending on their age and hours of training. The training effectiveness was significantly correlated with the level of behavior towards the elderly. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrated the necessity of developing a level of educational training that will help improve caregiver trainees' care by positively changing their behavior towards the elderly.
PURPOSE This study was object to the effects of a resistance exercise combined with relaxation therapy on blood pressure, frequency of exercise and physical fitness in elderly women. METHODS Seventy three elderly women participated in an exercise program for 12 months. The exercise program consisted of stretching, massage and resistance training using thera-bands twice a week and 50 minutes in every sessions each week. Repeated measures ANOVA were performed using SAS. RESULTS After the exercise program there was a significant difference in systolic blood pressure, frequency of exercise, body fat, sitting to standing, walking 2 minutes, sitting on a chair and reaching, and standing on one leg with eyes opened. After 6 months, there was a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and significant increase in frequency of exercise, body fat, sitting to standing and standing on one leg with eyes opened. In 12 months, there was a significant increase in body fat, 2 minutes walking, and sitting in a chair and reaching. CONCLUSION Resistance exercise combined with muscle relaxation therapy would have a positive effect on elderly women. We found that it was helpful for the elderly women in terms of physical fitness.
The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the Self Efficacy Promotion and Exercise Training Program to decrease anxiety and depression and to increase the quality of life for kidney transplant recipients. The subjects were selected randomly among the patients who underwent renal transplant at three major transplantation hospitals in Seoul, Korea. The observed subjects in this study consisted of 56 patients who had renal transplantations between one to twelve months prior to this study. The patients did not take any regular physical exercise. This study was carried out between November, 1999 and March, 2000. The study groups were divided into 3 groups; exercise training group (n=16), self efficacy group (n=18) and control group (n=22). The exercise training group received self efficacy promotion and exercise training program for 12 weeks. The self efficacy group received self efficacy promotion education, but no exercise training was given. The control group was not offered any education. The anxiety, depression and quality of life were evaluated 3 times, before the experiment, after 8 weeks and after 12 weeks. The data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, ANOVA and Scheff test. The results were as follows: 1. After the experiment, anxiety and depression scores of the exercise training group and self efficacy group were more significantly decreased than those of the control group (p=.05). 2. After the experiment, the quality of life score of the exercise training group and self efficacy group were more significantly increased than those of the control group (p=.05). This study showed that the Self Efficacy and Exercise Training Programs were effective. Therefore, it is expected that the Self Efficacy Promotion and Exercise Training Program could be widely applied as an effective independent nursing intervention to decrease anxiety and depression and to increase quality of life for kidney transplant recipients.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of assertiveness training and values clarification training on nurse's role conflict. Fifty-seven registered nurses participated to in the study : they were employed at to three general hospitals, all of which were located in the city of Daegu, Korea. The study employs two treatment groups. The assertiveness training group consisted of nursing subjects who participated in nine, 90-120 minute sessions of assertiveness training over five weeks. The other treatment group received nine, 90-120 minute group sessions of values clarification at the same time. For the control group, nursing subjects did not participated in any training. For pre-test evaluation, Role Conflict Inventory-General tests (RCI-G), were administered to al subjects in al three groups one week prior to the beginning of the treatment and for post-test evaluation, Communication Conflict Inventory-Specific tests (RCI-S), were administered two weeks after the last session. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on RCI-S scores were run using the SPSS program. In order to test statistical difference among mean scores of the subscales obtained after treatment, multiple comparisons were carried out using the Turkey method. The subscale scores of nurse's role conflict of the groups who experienced the assertiveness training and the values clarification, were significantly lower than the control group in role ambiguity, environmental barriers, and competency deficit, but there was no difference in collaboration deficit. The value clarification training was more effective than was th assertiveness training in decreasing the subscale scores in role ambiguity. There were, however, no differences in environmental barriers, competency deficit or collaboration deficit between two experimental groups.
