Effectiveness of Delirium Education Programs for Nurses in Acute Hospitals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Purpose
This study aimed to review the effectiveness of delirium education programs for nurses in acute hospitals.
Methods
The inclusion criteria were studies on delirium education programs for nurses published in English and Korean from 2012 to 2022. A literature search was conducted in the RISS, KISS, DBpia, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases using the key words of "delirium", "nurse", and "education". Qualitative appraisal of studies was conducted using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2) and the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool translated by National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency (NECA). For meta-analysis, the effect size of the intervention was calculated as standardized mean difference.
Results
Eighteen studies were selected for the systematic review. While the contents of the education programs were similar, the teaching methods were different. Interventions implemented included traditional learning, e-learning, and blended learning. Teaching methods of delirium education programs for nurses included lecture, discussion, practice, simulation, role-play, and coaching. The systematic review found that delirium education programs for nurses effectively increased post-intervention outcomes in 17 studies. Delirium education programs for nurses have benefits regarding delirium knowledge and performance. In four studies, delirium education program interventions improved delirium nursing performance (95% CI: 0.48~2.44, p=.003).
Conclusion
These results demonstrate the need for a standardized delirium education program. It is recommended that further studies evaluating the patient outcome effects of delirium education programs should be conducted.

Education Programs for Newly Graduated Nurses in Hospitals: A Scoping Review

Purpose
This study was a scoping review designed to identify research trends in education programs for newly graduated nurses in Korea.
Methods
The methodological framework was based on a previous work by Arksey and O’Malley. The studies reviewed were found through electronic databases, such as DBpia, RISS, PubMed, and CINAHL. The scope of the data was from January 2000 to December 2019. Each study was analyzed, and extracted data were abstracted into the following domains: publication characteristics, study design, program details, and program evaluation.
Results
The 26 studies were reviewed. The majority of the educational domain was competency enhancement education. The following teaching methods were used: lectures, demonstrations, simulations, team based learning, and discussions. Most educational program evaluations involved reaction and learning evaluation.
Conclusion
Appropriate education is essential for newly graduated nurses to adapt to their work. However, there was a lack of research on education programs for newly graduated nurses to adapt to their work before gaining clinical experience. Results indicate that it is necessary to develop various education programs and program evaluations. Future researchers should focus on nursing education programs to enhance the clinical competency of newly graduated nurses.

PURPOSE
This study aimed to examine the effect of multidisciplinary lifestyle modification program in overweight or obese middle-aged women.
METHODS
This study was conducted from January 2 to June 5, 2018 at Jeonju city in South Korea. A non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. A total of 46 women were assigned to the experiment group (n=22) or the control group (n=24). The multidisciplinary lifestyle modification program for this study consisted of physical activity, nutritional management, stress management, health counseling, lifestyle monitoring, and affective support based on King's goal attainment theory, which was implemented for eight weeks.
RESULTS
Significant group differences were found in health- promoting behavior (p<.001), depression (p<.001), anxiety (p=.018), stress (p=.001), weight loss (p=.002) and reproductive symptoms (p=.020) among over-weight and obese middle-aged women.
CONCLUSION
Multidisciplinary lifestyle modification program is effective in improving health-promoting behavior, depression, anxiety, stress, weight loss and reproductive symptoms. Therefore, healthcare providers should develop strategies to expand and provide multidisciplinary lifestyle modification program through interaction and transaction for overweight or obese middle-aged women.

PURPOSE
This study aimed to develop a navigation program for family caregivers of stroke patients admitted to a rehabilitation hospital and evaluate differences in caregiver outcomes before and after the intervention.
METHODS
The navigation program consists of education, demonstration and return demonstration. To evaluate the program, we conducted a quasi-experimental study in 44 caregivers (22 experimental group received the navigation program vs. 22 controls group did not received). Caregivers completed the burden, anxiety, depression, self efficacy, caregiving mastery, quality of life, and patient's Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Data were collected using self-report structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 with the χ2-test, and independent t-test.
RESULTS
Compared with the control group, caregivers who received the navigation program reported significant decrease in caregiver burden, depressive symptoms and anxiety and significant improvement in their mastery, self-efficacy, quality of life and patient's ADL.
CONCLUSION
Delivering the navigation program to family caregivers of stroke patients in a rehabilitation hospital setting was feasible. Our results provide preliminary support for the navigation program to reduce negative outcomes (e.g., burden, anxiety, depression) and improve positive outcomes (e.g., mastery, self efficacy, quality of life, patient's activities of daily living) in family caregivers who experience first stroke diagnosis of their loved one.

Development of Mobile-application based Cognitive Training Program for Cancer Survivors with Cognitive Complaints

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to design a mobile-application of a cognitive training program for people who have chemo-related cognitive complaints.
METHODS
The program was developed based on the networkbased instructional system design proposed by Jung. The program consisted of several tasks centered on four cognitive domains: learning, memory, working memory, and attention. For memory learning, a target-image and all its elements (color, position, and number) were presented on the screen that had to be recognized among a number of distractor-figures. In working memory training, the previous learned target-figure according to the level of difficulty had to be remembered among many different figures. In attention training named “Find the same figure,” two identical symbols in a grid-pattern filled with different images were presented on the screen, and these had to be simultaneously touched. In attention training named “Find the different figure,” a different symbol in a grid pattern filled with same figures had to be selected. This program was developed to train for a minimum of 20 min/day, four days/week for six weeks.
RESULTS
This cognitive training revealed statistically significant improvement in subjective cognitive impairments (t=3.88, p=.006) at six weeks in eight cancer survivors.
CONCLUSION
This cognitive training program is expected to offer individualized training opportunities for improving cognitive function and further research is needed to test the effect in various settings.

PURPOSE
Purpose of the study was to identify the effect of the Comprehensive Education Program (CEP) on intraprocedure anxiety, post-procedure uncertainty and athletic performance of back strengthening of patients undergo spinal nerve block (SNB).
METHODS
The participants (experimental group=33, control group=33) were recruited from a university hospital in G metropolitan city. Data were collected from July to November 2015. The experimental group was individually provided with a booklet/motion picture about the SNB and back strengthening exercise training before the SNB. This group also received a leaflet about back strengthening exercise post SNB. The Anxiety-Visual Analog Scale (A-VAS), the Mishel adapted uncertainty scale and newly created knowledge scale/athletic performance checklist were utilized as our study tools.
RESULTS
Intra-procedure anxiety score (F=25.70, p<.001), post-procedure uncertainty score (F=82.56, p<.001), post-procedure knowledge score (F=14.63, p<.001) and athletic performance rate of back strengthening (p=.003) of the experimental group showed statistically significant differences in comparison with the control group.
CONCLUSION
This CEP is a cost and time-effective intervention for patients who undergo spinal injections, so it should be actively utilized as an educational management strategy in outpatient.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a competency based safety and quality improving education program for undergraduate nursing students.
METHODS
A quasi-experimental study of a non-equivalent control group pre and post test design was used. The participants were sixty-eight undergraduate nursing students recruited from the two universities in G and M cities. They were assigned to either a treatment group (n=35) or a comparison group (n=33). A five-day educational program developed based on the ADDIE Instructional Design Model was offered to the treatment group whereas the comparison group did not receive any instruction. Data were collected using self-report structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 with the χ² test, and independent t-test.
RESULTS
The students in the treatment group reported significant positive changes for patient safety knowledge, skill and perception of quality and safety competencies.
CONCLUSION
Findings from this study supports that competency based quality improving and safety education program is a useful intervention strategy to promote student's knowledge, skill and perception of quality and safety competencies.

PURPOSE
This study was to develop and verify the effects of the exercise-cognitive combined dual-task training program on cognitive function and depression of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODS
A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants were assigned into two groups: an experimental group receiving an exercise-cognitive combined dual-task (n=20) and a control group receiving a simple-task (n=18). After 8 weeks of intervention (2 days per week), the change in depression and cognitive functions were compared between the groups.
RESULTS
General cognitive function (t=-2.81, p=.011), frontal cognitive function (Z=-3.50, p<.001), attention/working memory function (U=-2.91, p=.004), depression (t=4.96, p<.001) of the experimental group were significantly increased than those of the control group.
CONCLUSION
The findings of the study showed that an exercise-cognitive combined dual-task program for MCI was effective in improving general cognitive function, frontal and executive function, attention/working memory function, and reducing depression.

The Effect of Periodical and Individualized Educational Program for Long-term Hemodialysis Patient

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to provide an effective nursing intervention using an individualized educational program composed with knowledge, compliance, and physiologic parameters for long-term hemodialysis patients.
METHODS
A quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group and pre- and post-test design was conducted with 40 hemodialysis patients at G university hospital in the J city from June to August, 2015. A data was analyzed using frequency, percentage, chi2 test, Shapiro-Wilk test, independent-samples t-test and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 21.0 program.
RESULTS
knowledge about hemodialysis and patient role behaviors were not significantly different between the two measures. In the biological index, there was significant difference between the groups by points in time and group in blood potassium, albumin, and Kt/v. However, there was no difference in gaining weight between hemodialysis, hemoglobin, and blood phosphorus.
CONCLUSION
The individual training program in this study had an effect on changing some physiological indicators of long-term hemodialysis patients. Future research is warranted for developing various kinds of education program incorporating the findings of the study for the given population.

Development of Clinical Scenarios and Rubrics for a Program Outcome-based Evaluation for Students' Adult Health Nursing Practice

PURPOSE
This study was aimed to develop frequently-used clinical scenarios and scoring rubrics to assess core basic nursing skills in adult health nursing clinical practice for clinical evaluation based on program learning outcomes (PO).
METHODS
This study was a methodological research combining focus group interviews and questionnaires to select and construct scenarios. Data were collected from clinical practitioners, adult health nursing professors, and new nurses from November, 2013 to April, 2014. The developed scenarios and rubrics were applied to nursing students by way of showing an example.
RESULTS
The 12 frequently-used clinical scenarios were developed. The proportion of the evaluation rubrics were 30% for clinical instructors where as 70% for college instructors. In order for students to achieve the important learning outcomes from the courses for clinical practice, four program outcomes (POs) were selected as well as a rubric for each POs was developed. Students who had situation-based clinical practices showed higher levels of satisfaction on mastery of core basic nursing skills and communication skills.
CONCLUSION
This findings of the study suggested the strategies for complementing pitfalls in clinical setting and achieving PO during students' clinical practicum.

Effects of a Simulation-based Educational Program for Gastroendoscopic Surgery Patients

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a simulation-based educational program on anxiety and discomfort in patients with early stage of stomach cancer or stomach adenoma undergoing gastroendoscopic surgery.
METHODS
The study employed a non-equivalence control group and non-synchronized design to prevent diffusion of treatment. Data were collected from 110 patients (experimental group=55, control group=55) admitted to a department of gastroenterology to undergo gastroendoscopic surgery for early stage of stomach cancer or stomach adenoma. The program was conducted as a 30-minute simulation-based education including 12 processes which patients would experience. Outcome variables were state anxiety, objective discomfort, and subjective discomfort.
RESULTS
The scores of state anxiety in the experimental group significantly decreased over time compared to those in the control group. The scores of objective and subjective discomfort after surgery in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group.
CONCLUSION
The study findings suggested that the simulation-based educational program making a person feel sense of real experiences could reduce anxiety and discomfort in gastroendoscopic surgery patients.

Development of a Program to Facilitate Evidence-Based Practice Based on the Transtheoretical Model

PURPOSE
This study developed a program to facilitate evidence-based practice (EBP) in one nursing organization, and identifies the effects of the program on the nurses' EBP facilitators.
METHODS
The program was based on the Transtheoretical Model of stages of organizational change, a literature review, the cases of hospitals overseas, and a prior study. To identify the effects of the program, a one-group pretest-posttest study was conducted with 45 nurses who participated in the EBP implementation.
RESULTS
The program consisted of EBP educational sessions, consultations with academic nursing faculty and clinical EBP mentors, and support from the administration and relevant departments. After the EBP program, there was a statistically significant difference in belief in the value of EBP between the pretest and the posttest (t=2.31, p=.026). However, no significant differences were found between the pretest and the posttest for organizational support to develop EBP (t=0.62, p=.537), skills in locating and evaluating research reports (s=-1.00, p=.987), knowledge of research language and skills (s=-1.00, p=.986), and time to devote to EBP (s=-23.00, p=.711).
CONCLUSION
The findings provide important data that can be used to develop and implement strategies for enhancing EBP in clinical settings in Korea.

Nurses' Perception of the Importance of Evaluating Continuing Education Programs

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to explore the nurses'perception of the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs.
METHODS
Subjects were 465 nurses enrolled in continuing nursing education programs at five university hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected from September 20, 2011 to October 13, 2011. The instrument was developed by the author through a literature review. Content validity was established from a panel of six experts. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.
RESULTS
The purpose of the program was rated as the most important domain by the subjects. Interestingly, 'program outcome' and 'effectiveness of program' were ranked below the mean (M=3.64+/-0.75). These two domains were influenced by the district of work and the type of institution. The position of the participants at their institutions made the significant differences on their perception of 'program purpose.' CONCLUSION: The results of this study might aid us to have better understanding for what nurses perceive the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs. This information might be able to be used for improving programs. Further studies are needed to explore the validity of the instruments to evaluate continuing nursing education programs.

Development of Multimedia Contents on Smoking Cessation Leadership Program for Health Care Professionals

PURPOSE
Health care professionals represent an immediately available resource to promote smoking cessation. However, the content in smoking cessation intervention courses in most institutions is insufficiently covered due to the limited number of class hours. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive tobacco cessation-web-based, multimedia, educational program for a range of medical professionals.
METHODS
Based on Jung's Teaching and Learning Structure Plan Model, a development process was proposed comprising four stages: (1) analysis, (2) planning, (3) production, and (4) operation/evaluation. The effectiveness of the program was tested using quasi-experimental design, and the participants in experimental group were required to complete the program. Changes in the level of knowledge and attitude were measured.
RESULTS
The educational program developed includes nine topics and 26 sub-topics. A total of 180 storyboards, 15 videos, and 27 pictures were made. After the education, the level of knowledge was significantly increased in the experimental group.
CONCLUSION
This web-based program can be recommended as a potential medium for health care professionals to use in counseling smoking cessation. The study findings also indicated that the program may be either offered as a teaching aid or utilized concurrently with lectures for students studying health care-related topics.

Critical Review of the Effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Stress and Health-related Quality of Life (QOL)

PURPOSE
In numerous studies, MBSR programs have been shown to reduce stress and improve health-related QOL. Although MBSR programs have been shown to be beneficial, its effects have not been well-determined among Korean populations in clinical nursing practice. The purpose of this review was to describe the effects of MBSR on stress and health-related QOL so that the potential benefits of this intervention may be evaluated for wider application in Korea.
METHODS
Articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the English or Korean language up to 2009 were reviewed; 14 articles met the inclusion criteria for this review and there were no Korean papers.
RESULTS
MBSR groups were found to have significantly reduced stress outcomes relative to non-MBSR groups in 6 of 11 studies. In regards to health-related QOL, participants of the MBSR programs had increased scores after MBSR intervention relative to control groups in 5 of 7 studies.
CONCLUSION
MBSR programs was effective in decreasing stress and increased the health-related QOL in the majority of studies reviewed. MBSR merits study in Korean patients to determine whether similar salutary patient outcomes may be obtained.

Development of a Program for Anger Management Based on Self-efficacy in Patients with Breast Cancer

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to develop a program for anger management based on self-efficacy.
METHODS
In this study, four types of approaches to enhance anger control were developed; 1) a role play for vicarious experiences; 2) an assertive training for anger expression; 3) a 30-minute long education program & a 20-minute long telephone call coaching for verbal persuasion; and 4) a booklet for anger management and self care behaviors. One group pretest-posttest design was used for evaluating the program. Study subjects were 6 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The group were received a 4-week intervention, 60 ~ 90 minutes a day weekly, and measured the variables at baseline, 4 weeks later. Anger-in, anger-out, and anger-control were measured by STAXI-K. Data was analysed by Wilcoxon using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Anger situation was analysed according to primary anger-thoughts and secondary anger-thoughts based on cognitive theories of anger.
RESULTS
The program for anger management consisted of a role play, assertive training, education, telephone call coaching and a booklet. The program revealed significantly less Anger-in (Z = -1.997, p = .046), anger-out (Z = -2.207, p = .027). No difference, however, was found in anger control (Z=-1.826, p=.068).
CONCLUSION
This evaluation suggested that more assertive training and longer intervention may be needed to maximize anger control.

The Development and Effectiveness of a Program to Prevent Ventilator Associated Pneumonia in the ICU

PURPOSE
This study developed and evaluated a systematic intervention among medical ICU nurses for preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (hereafter VAP).
METHODS
A VAP prevention program was proposed based on a literature review, revised to fit the target situation, and validated. It was composed of one-time interventions including education, pamphlets, hand cultures, and a quiz event, as well as repeated interventions such as posters, reminders, posting hand culture results, and performance feedback. A simulated control group pretest-posttest design was used to verify the effectiveness of the VAP control program. The incidence of VAP among ICU patients was measured both during 3 months before (n = 80) and during 3 months after (n = 75) intervention.
RESULTS
The VAP prevention program's effectiveness, with a pre-intervention VAP rate of 17.38 and post-intervention rate of 11.04 per 1,000 ventilator days, showed a clinical tendency to decrease, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = .750).
CONCLUSION
A VAP prevention program of multiple interventions can be useful in decreasing the VAP rate. Given that the monthly decrease in the VAP rate was not considered statistically significant, long-term research needs to be done. Additionally, since this study targeted only nurses, it is suggested that future research targets other health care workers who can influence VAP rates.

The Effects of Resistance Exercise Program for Elders with Type 2 Diabetes on the Self Care, Stress and HbA1c

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of resistance exercise program for elders with type 2 Diabetes on the self care, stress and HbA1c. METHODS: Thirty three elders with type 2 Diabetes(18 experimental and 15 control subjects) were selected conveniently among the aged who had been enrolled in a community senior center. The subjects in experimental group participated in a resistance exercise program for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/Win 12.0. RESULTS: The resistance exercise program showed a statistical difference in self care(t=-4.39, p=.000) and stress(t=2.22, p=.034). However, there was not a statistical difference in HbA1c (F=.556, p=.557), but experimental group had decreased continuously in HbA1c after the program. CONCLUSION: The resistance exercise program improved self care and reduced the stress in the elders with type 2 Diabetes. Therefore, resistance exercise program can be applied as an effective nursing intervention to promote self care, decrease the stress and to prevent complication for the elders with type 2 Diabetes.

The Effect of a Simulated Disability Exercise Program on Attitude and Stereotyping toward People with Disabilities by Nursing Students

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a simulated disability program on attitude and stereotyping by nursing students toward people with disabilities.
METHODS
A total of 107 undergraduate nursing students attended and completed pre-and post-questionnaires on attitude and stereotyping. The experimental group participated in a simulation exercise program which was composed of wheel-chair mobility and vision modification in Nam-won Rehabilitation Center. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program including frequency, percentage, chi-square test and t-test.
RESULTS
There was no significant difference in attitude toward people with disabilities between the two groups (t=-.743, p=.459). But there was a significant difference in stereotyping between the experimental and the control group(t=-4.097, p=.000).
CONCLUSION
As the result of this study, we can conclude that the program was effective to improve stereotyping toward people with disabilities.

Development and Evaluation of an AIDS Education Program for Health Care Workers

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to develope and evaluate the effects of an AIDS education program among health care workers on knowledge, attitudes and care intention about AIDS.
METHODS
This study was conducted by self reporting with a 44 items of structured questionnaire by 291 health care workers. The research was a quasi-experimental study using one group pre-post design. AIDS education program was consisted of phases for 50 minutes, using power point by a researcher and research assistants. Data were collected before and after education and was analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired t-test.
RESULTS
The level of general cognition about AIDS was low. There were a statistically significant increases in the mean of knowledge(t=-22.17, p=.000) and care intention(t=-2.74, p=.006). However, there was no significant difference in the mean of attitudes(t=-.57, p=.569) between the pre-post test.
CONCLUSION
The findings of this study showed the benefits of providing educational interventions for improving knowledge and care about AIDS, while there not any significant changes in attitudes, especially in items based on Korean socio-cultural values. Therefore, to increase attitude about AIDS, various teaching strategies need to be further studied and evaluated.

The Effects of a Follow-up Program on Physical, Emotional, and Social Function after Breast Cancer Surgery

PURPOSE
To evaluate the effects of a follow-up program for breast cancer patients after surgery.
METHOD
A quasi-experimental design was used. The subjects were 56 breast cancer patients (experimental group: 27, control group: 29). The subjects of the experimental group participated in the Follow-up program of 7 sessions once a week, during 4 weeks including one telephone visit. The program consisted of health education of breast cancer, exercise, lymph edema prevention, diet education, theraband rehabilitation exercise, laugh therapy, and breast self examination. The obtained data were analysed by using the ANCOVA of SPSS.
RESULTS
There was a significant difference in the scores of physical wellbeing, symptom distress and mood state between the two groups.
CONCLUSION
Considering these research results, short-term intervention could improve physical and emotional functioning abilities by helping better health. Nurses should establish and manage a proper program to provide multipurpose support and it must apply the program after surgery as soon as possible for breast cancer women.

The Effect of School Based Smoking Prevention Program for College Freshmen

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a school based smoking prevention program for college freshmen.
METHOD
The nonequivalent control group, pretest-post-test design was used. Among 16 departments in a University located in S city, students in 8, randomly selected, departments received 6 sessions of smoking prevention program consisted of small group discussion led by smoking cessation leaders, video watching, and lectures from March 15 to June 9, 2004. Students in remaining 8 departments did not receive any education. Student's attitude, intention, stress, temptation, knowledge and self efficacy was measured.
RESULT
The level of stress and smoking temptation was significantly decreased in the experimental group over that of the control group.
CONCLUSION
It was proven that this school based smoking prevention program was effective for decreasing smoking temptation in college freshmen. In the future, more efforts should be given to college age students to prevent them becoming chronic smokers.

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to identify the effects of the self efficacy promoting program on self efficacy and performance of preventive health behavior of uterine cervical cancer for community nurses.
METHOD
A one group quasi-experimental research with pre and post test design was used. The subjects of the study were consisted of twenty two community nurses in a city in Korea. The whole program was carried out from July to September, 2003. The effect of the program was analyzed at the first week, the fifth week, and the ninth week since the experiment input began. Data were analyzed with repeated ANOVA to determine the effects of program.
RESULTS
1) After the self efficacy promoting program, self efficacy scores were significantly increased compared to those before the program(F=12.029. p=0.005). 2) After the self efficacy promoting program, preventive health behavior scores were significantly increased than those before the program(F=10.431. p=0.006).
CONCLUSIONS
This 9-week program showed much affirmative effect on the prevention of uterine cervical cancer for community nurses. Thus this program can be recommended to the management of the prevention and early detection of uterine cancer.

The Effect of Health Promotion Program on Self Efficacy, Health Problems, Farmers Syndrome and Quality of Life of the Rural Elderly

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identity the effects of a health promotion program for rural elderly people on self efficacy, health problems, farmers syndrome and quality of life.
METHOD
The study was a nonequivalent control group pre-post experimental design. The data collection was performed from April 12th, 2003 to August 2nd, 2003. The subjects were selected at Mari Myun Geochang Gun in Korea. Forty-four elders were included in the experimental group and 45 elders were included in the control group. The 16-week health promotion program was given to the experimental group. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square-test, t-test, paired t-test with SPSS/Win 10.0 program.
RESULT
The experimental group showed a lower scores of health problems and farmers syndrome than the control group, and higher scores of quality of life than the control group. There were no significant differences in self efficacy.
CONCLUSION
From the above results, it can be concluded that the health promotion program for rural elderly is an effective intervention for improving the rural elderly's quality of life and reducing health problems and farmer's syndrome. Therefore, development of strategy that can spread the health promotion program for rural elderly to the elderly of other rural areas are needed.

Development of an E-learning Education Program for Preventing Nursing Errors and Adverse Events of Operating Room Nurses

PURPOSE
This study was to develop, implement, and evaluate an e-learning education program for improving practical knowledge and preventing nursing errors and adverse events of nurses working in the operating room (OR). METHOD: The e-learning program was developed and evaluated according to the following processes: 1) preparation phase 2) implementation phase 3) evaluation phase. In evaluation phase, the effectiveness was analyzed based on the Kirkpatrick's model. RESULTS: The e-learning program consisted of OR basic nursing skills and techniques and nursing activities' manual based on the categories of nursing errors: surgical operation preparation, nursing skills and techniques, environment management, patient safety and comfort, and patient monitoring. The program was provided through on-line, http:// cafe.daum.net/pnuhorn, for 4 weeks. The mean score(percent) of participants' satisfaction was 21.24+/-1.71(68.2%). Their total knowledge level was significantly improved(Z=-3.00, p=.003) and specifically in the category of environment management(Z=-3.77, p<.001) and patient monitoring(Z=-2.46, p=.014). The occurrence of nursing errors or adverse events was a little decreased, but not statistically significant(Z= -3.10, p=.756). CONCLUSION: E-learning for nurses is one way of effective and efficient teaching-learning strategies. For better e-learning, it is important to develop the vital content of the education and objective measures for detecting nursing errors and adverse events.

An Effect of the Secondary Stroke Prevention Education Program on Self-care of Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to examine the effects of the secondary stroke prevention education program to inhibit the recurrence of the acute ischemic stroke patients, and to maintain and promote knowledge about stroke, self-efficacy and self-care. METHOD: This study was designed to take a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test with the nonequivalent control group. The experimental group consists of 20 patients and control group consists of 20 patients. The experimental group was applied the secondary stroke prevention education program. In order to verify the effects of the secondary stroke prevention education program, knowledge about stroke, self-efficacy and self-care scale were measured before the intervention and 4 weeks, 12 weeks after discharge. The tools for measuring knowledge about stroke, self-efficacy and self-care are developed by the researcher. The data was analyzed by SPSS win 10.0 program using chi2-test, Fisher's Exact Test, t-test, Kolmogorov- Smirnov Z, and Repeated Measures ANOVA. RESULT: There was a statistically significant difference in knowledge about stroke (F=4.021, p=.026), self-efficacy(F=6.096, p=.018), and self-care(F=8.026, p=.007) between the experimental and the control group after intervention. CONCLUSION: It is considered that the program can be used as an effective nursing intervention in clinical practice.

Effects of Smoking Cessation Program for Male University Students: Perceived Nicotine Dependency and Self-efficacy

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 8 weeks smoking cessation program(SCP) developed by researchers. METHOD: One group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The subjects were 88 male university students who consented to participate in the 8 weeks SCP. The SCP in this study consisted of a stop-smoking class, e-mail, SMS(short message service), cellular phone, internet cafe, displayed panel, and patch or acupuncture for quitting smoking. Korean version of questionnaire for nicotine dependency by Ahn et al.(2002), the smoking self-efficacy scale translated by Choi(1999) and subjects' opinion about the SCP were measured. The data were analyzed by using frequency, Chi-Square test, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA with SPSS WIN 10.1 Program. RESULTS: 1) The rate of quitting smoking was 31.8% after 8 weeks SCP. 2) There was no significant decrease in the nicotine dependency score among smoking subjects after SCP. 3) There was a significant increase in self-efficacy after SCP. The mean score of self -efficacy in the quitting smoking group increased significantly, but did not significantly change in the smoking group. 4) The stop-smoking class was the most helpful among contents of the SCP. Contents of the SCP except for internet cafe were useful for quitting smoking in this study. CONCLUSION: The above results indicated that the 8 weeks SCP would be a helpful intervention to quit smoking for male university students.

Development and Effect of East-West Self-Help Group Program for Rehabilitation of Post-Stroke Clients: A Preliminary Study

PURPOSE
The purpose of this preliminary study was to develop and evaluate the effects of East-West Self-help program for Rehabilitation of post-stroke clients. METHOD: This program is developed through literature review, survey and seminar. The program is consisted of six sessions twice a week for 6 weeks. This program is composed of health education on stroke, exercise, oriental nursing interventions, and therapeutic recreation. The outcomes have been evaluated on the basis of perceived health status, self-efficacy, U/E function, ADLs and subjective response. RESULTS: 1) After the 6 week program, the perceived health status had improved and the score of rehabilitation self-efficacy increased significantly. 2) After the 6 week program, the score of BADL increased significantly, but, the score of IADL was not statistically significant. 3) After the 6 week program, the amount of use and quality of movement of the affected U/E were increased significantly. 4) All of the participants showed satisfaction with this program. CONCLUSION: Considering these research results, the program is effective in improving functional abilities and self-management ability. Therefore this program could be continuously developed and implemented as a community based self-helf group program for post-stroke clients.

Development of a Constipation Intervention Program for Inpatients

PURPOSE
The purposes of this study were to develope and evaluate a constipation intervention program for inpatients. METHOD: To develope this program, Six phases were processed including the organization of team, the analysis of medical chart, the development of tentative constipation intervention program, the test of content validity, the test of clinical validity and the determination of final constipation intervention program. To evaluate the clinical validity of this program, 10 subjects who were in the C University Hospital were selected from March, 2001 to October, 2001. RESULT: The clinical validity was supplied by the pilot test, showing the potential effect of the program. Based on the validity results the final algorithm and the form of nursing record for this program which consist of the 3-step assessments and the intervention protocol were presented in this study. CONCLUSION: The advantage of this program is being able to assess and manage constipation simultaneously and is especially effective to patients who are at risk for developing constipation during their admission. Further study needs are also necessary to evaluate the effect of this program on the self-symptom of constipation.

Effects of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program on Health Behavior and Physiologic Parameters for Myocardial Infarction Patients

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a cardiac rehabilitation program for patients with myocardial infarction.
METHOD
The subjects were 45 myocardial infarction patients(22 for experimental group and 23 for the control group). Data were collected through questionnaire survey, blood test, and the treadmill test, between October 1, 1999 and December 31, 2000. As for data analyses, paired and unpaired t-test and x2 test were adopted using the SAS program.
RESULT
1. The post-test revealed that increase in compliance score of health behavior was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. 2. The increase in HDL cholesterol was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, in the post-test. 3. The experimental group showed significantly higher duration of exercise time and maximal METs than the control group after the program.
CONCLUSION
The above findings indicate that a cardiac rehabilitation program was effective in increasing compliance of health behaviors, serum HDL cholesterol level, duration of exercise time, and maximal METs in patients with myocardial infarction. Accordingly, we can adopt the individualized cardiac rehabilitation programs as a nursing intervention.
