Purpose
The purpose of this study was to compare and verify the effects of aroma essential oil inhalation and music listening on stress response, vital signs, and bispectral index. Methods In a randomized controlled trial design, the participants consisted of healthy adults aged 20~50 years who were randomly assigned to the Aroma essential oil inhalation Group (AG), Music Listening Group (MLG), or control group. The AG inhaled aroma essential oil for 10 minutes, the MLG listened to music for 10 minutes, and the control group took a break for 10 minutes. Stressors introduced to the participants included 70 dB of white noise and an arithmetic calculation. Results The perceived stress was significantly different between three groups at 10 minutes and 30 minutes after the intervention. The stress responses of the AG and MLG were significantly lower than that of the control group. At 10 minutes and 30 minutes after the intervention, there were significant differences in the Bispectral index (BIS) between three groups, and the BIS of the AG and MLG were significantly lower than that of the control group. At 30 minutes after the intervention, the stress index, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate were significantly different between three groups. Conclusion Aroma essential oil inhalation and music listening are effective nursing interventions as they reduce stress, stabilize vital signs, and have sedative effects in healthy adults who perceive stress.

Relationship among Sleep Quality, Heart Rate Variability, Fatigue, Depression, and Anxiety in Adults

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among sleep quality, heart rate variability (HRV), fatigue, depression, and anxiety reported by Korean adults.
METHODS
A cross-sectional study of 208 adults aged 20~60 years was conducted using a short-term HRV analysis and self-reported questionnaires of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fatigue Severity Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory.
RESULTS
Subjects with good sleep quality (PSQI score≤5) had higher HRV total power (t=2.03, p=.043) and high-frequency (t=2.04, p=.043) with lower fatigue (t=−4.08, p < .001), depressive mood (t=−3.66, p < .001), and trait anxiety (t=−3.84, p < .001) than subjects with poor sleep quality. Poor sleep quality was negatively correlated with HRV total power (r=−.17, p=.016), high-frequency (r=−.14, p=.049), and positively fatigue (r=.39, p < .001), depression (r=.44, p < .001), state anxiety (r=.23, p=.001) and trait anxiety (r=.34, p < .001).
CONCLUSION
The results indicated that sleep quality is correlated with HRV which reflects the activities of the autonomic nerve system, fatigue, depression, and anxiety in adults.

Effects of Tailored Water Drinking on the Orthostatic Hypotension in the Elderly

PURPOSE
The purpose of the study was to examine preventive effects of tailored water drinking on orthostatic hypotension and heart rate variability in the elderly.
METHODS
A non-equivalent control group pre and post time-series design was adapted. Among a total of 64 elderly people admitted to two nursing homes, 35 elderly were assigned to the experimental group and 29 were assigned to the control group. As for the elderly people in the experimental group, tailed water drink was provided according to the scheduled time for six weeks. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured twice before the intervention in both groups. The data were analyzed with SPSS program using t-test, chi2-test, and repeated measure of ANOVA.
RESULTS
There were significant differences in blood pressure and heart rate variability between the two groups.
CONCLUSION
Tailored water drinking had preventive effects on decreasing blood pressure fall as well as prevalence of orthostatic hypotension in the elderly people.
