Influencing Factors on Mid-Life Crisis
Hae Kyung Chang
Korean J Adult Nurs 2018;30(1):98-105.   Published online February 28, 2018
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7475/kjan.2018.30.1.98
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to describe the factors which may influence a reported mid-life crisis.
METHODS
The research design was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sampling. Data were collected from 209 middle aged men and women by using self-reported questionnaires including Korean versions of Mid-life Crisis Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, Ego-resiliency Scale and Multipledimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression.
RESULTS
The mean for mid-life crisis was 2.69±0.58. A mid-life crisis was statistically significant in relationship to education (F=3.79, p=.024) and to economic status (F=4.07, p=.019). Further, there were significant correlations among meaning of life (r=−.34, p < .001), health status (r=−.42, p < .001), stress (r=.46, p < .001), ego resilience (r=−.29, p < .001), social support (r=−.47, p < .001), and mid-life crisis. Social support (β=−.29, p < .001), stress (β=.27, p < .001), and health status (β=−.22, p < .001) were significant predictors which explained 34% of the variance reported in a mid-life crisis.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that these factors influencing mid-life crisis should be considered when developing nursing intervention to cope with a mid-life crisis.

Yeo Won Jeong, Jung A Kim
Korean J Adult Nurs 2015;27(6):644-655.   Published online December 31, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7475/kjan.2015.27.6.644
PURPOSE
This study was aimed to clarify the concept of ego-resiliency in the context of nursing and to propose a definition of ego-resiliency.
METHODS
Rodgers' evolutionary approach to concept analysis was used to identify common attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the term ego-resiliency. A literature search of the RISS, NDSL, NAL, CINAHL, PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Scopus databases from 1980 to 2014 was conducted, using the key words of ego-resiliency, ego-resilience, and ego-resilient. Thirty-four relevant articles and one book were finally selected and throughly reviewed.
RESULTS
The results of the concept analysis concluded that ego-resiliency was a individualized, integrated, and coping resource and capacity leading personal adaptive capacity including physical, psychological, social well being in various adversity and challenge of life.
CONCLUSION
The findings of this study warranted nursing research on a development of nursing intervention related with ego-resiliency as a pivotal personal characteristic. By doing so, better understanding of human and health within the context of nursing could be achieved.

Hye Sun Jeong, Hyun Soo Oh
Korean J Adult Nurs 2015;27(3):262-272.   Published online June 30, 2015
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7475/kjan.2015.27.3.262
PURPOSE
This study was conducted to examine the mutual reciprocal relationship between elders' ego integrity and depression including physical and psycho-social predictors of both variables. The study also investigated the significant predictors of elders' ego integrity and depression.
METHODS
Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from 137 elders.
RESULTS
Perceived health status, self-esteem, family interaction, and depression were significant predictors of ego integrity, whereas pain, self-esteem, and ego integrity were significant factors of depression. The results also showed that ego integrity and depression had reciprocal relationship with each other.
CONCLUSION
Psycho-social factors might be more important to improve ego integrity and to alleviate depression in elderly subjects than physical factors.

A Comparative Study on Related Variables of Ego-Integrity in Elderly by Age Groups
Hee Kyung Kim
J Korean Acad Adult Nurs 2007;19(5):694-708.   Published online December 31, 2007
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine what types of customized nursing intervention for the elderly were most effective by looking at age group difference and other factors related to ego integrity.
METHODS
A secondary analysis was used with 104 elderly people. The data were analyzed using chi-square-test, Fisher's exact test, ANCOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression.
RESULTS
For those 80 and older, powerlessness was higher than for those in their 60s and 70s. The factors influencing ego integrity for those in their 60s were powerlessness, economic condition, source of discretionary money, and health condition; for those in their 70s - life satisfaction, self-esteem, and health condition; and for those 80 and older-life satisfaction and source of discretionary money.
CONCLUSION
In nursing for the elderly, age differences should be taken into consideration. The study suggests that for people in their 60s, the creation of jobs that allow them to earn money is important. For people in their 70s over, offering of health care and self-esteem programs through community health centers are equally important. For people in their 80s over, nursing programs for advocacy, support, and psychological care are needed in order to elevate their life satisfaction.

METHOD: The research was executed from April 2001 through September 2001, and research participants were male and female olderly people randomly assigned from 3 environmentally similar day care centers. They were divided into experimental group A and B, and a control group; The control group was divided into a daily care group and a regularly visiting group, and the experimental group A was for group reminiscence therapy with mugwort fragrance inhalation and the group B for group reminiscence therapy. RESULT: The group reminiscence therapy with mugwort fragrance inhalation showed significant effects on decrease of pain and depression, and improvement of ego integrity, and for 2 weeks after the treatment proved its continuous effect. CONCLUSION: The result above explains the fact the mugwort fragrance stimulates reminiscence and shows curing effects. In further researches, it is necessary to adapt various health problems of the elderly, not only to the aged with chonic pain.
