The Effects of Professional Autonomy, Job Satisfaction, and Perceived Patient-Safety Culture on Nurses' Patient-Safety Management Activities: A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose
This study aims to confirms the relationship between nurses' professional autonomy, job satisfaction, perceived patient-safety culture, and patient-safety management activities; it also identifies factors that influence their patient-safety management activities.
Methods
A cross-sectional study design was adopted. The participants were 164 nurses from at five hospitals in two G provinces, Korea, who participated in the study voluntarily. Data were collected between November and December 2022 via a 120-question structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS/WINdows software version 25.0. The data were measured by frequency, percentage, and mean and standard deviation, using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.
Results
The average age of the participants was 35.54±8.42 years; 143 (87.2%) were women. The following factors influenced their patient-safety management activities: level of education (β=.16, p=.018), experience of patient-safety education (β=.15, p=.014), and perceived patient-safety culture (β=.56, p<.001). The explanatory power of the nurses' patient-safety management activities was 44.0%.
Conclusion
Hospital managers should enable nurses to carry out patient-safety procedures competently by providing continuous patient-safety education; they should also revise regulations and systems to promote good patient-safety management practices and create an environment that supports patient safety. In addition, a program should be designed and implemented to improve nurses' perceived patient-safety culture.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of self-efficacy in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), knowledge of and susceptibility to STD, and the role of gender in sexual autonomy.
METHODS
Data were collected from 267 college students using self-report questionnaires during the period from the first to the twentieth of June 2015. Data were analyzed using χ² test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, simple and multiple regression techniques with the PASW/WIN 20.0 program. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test.
RESULTS
In male students, self-efficacy for STD prevention showed a full mediating effect in the relationship between STD susceptibility and sexual autonomy (β=-.08, p=.370). But in female students, it had a partial mediating effect (β=-.25, p=.001). And self-efficacy for STD prevention showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between knowledge of STD and sexual autonomy in the both male (β=.25, p=.005) and female students (β=.33, P<.001).
CONCLUSION
To enhance college students' sexual autonomy, it may be useful to build effective strategies enhancing students' knowledge about and susceptibility to STD and to develop a self-efficacy promotion program for college students.

An Ethical Appraisal of Informed Consent in the Clinical Setting

PURPOSE
This study attempted to analyze problems of informed consent in the clinical setting and appraise ethical aspects inherent in such issues in order to boost awareness of informed consent and its implementation among healthcare professionals.
METHODS
Study methods included identifying ethical meanings of informed consent in the clinical setting based on the principal ethics, and exploring the process of informed consent utilizing communicative ethics and feminine care ethics RESULTS: The ethical basis of informed consent encompasses not only respect for autonomy but also prohibiting malice, practicing beneficience, and establishing justice. These principles, however, are limited in illustrating the ethical aspects of communicative ethics and care ethics that are entailed in informed consent within clinical settings. The ethical meaning of informed consent involves a communicative and caring process between healthcare professionals, patients, and family built on mutual respect.
CONCLUSION
Healthcare professionals must fully understand the ethical meanings of informed consent and in turn respect and protect the clients' right to know and making decisions. Nurses especially, must take on the role of mediator and advocate throughout the process of obtaining informed consent, and practice ethical caring by facilitating communication grounded in mutual understanding among the physician, patient, and family members.
