PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the mediation of Self-Esteem in the relationship between Social Support and attitude toward the Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Treatment (WLST) for community dwelling elderly in order to provide a basis for planning nursing interventions to improve the attitude of elderly. METHODS The participants were 252 elderly residing in Seoul. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey distributed in March, 2016. The survey included scales on Social Support, attitude towards WLST and measures of Self-esteem. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS The mean score for the attitude towards WLST was 73.83. Self-Esteem was 29.44. Overall Social Support was 42.51. There were significant correlations among the three variables. Self-esteem was directly affected by the attitude (R²=24%). Attitude towards WLST was directly affected by Family Support. Family Support and Self-esteem affected by the attitude on WLST (R²=19%). Self-esteem had a partial mediating effect (β=.23, p < .001) in the relationship between Family Support and reported attitude from the WLST (Sobel test: Z=4.93, p < .001). CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this study, programs can be created focusing on Social Support and Self-Esteem improvement. The programs may positively change the elderly's attitude towards WLST.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to describe the degrees of body image, self esteem and Health Related Quality Of Life (HRQOL), and to identify factors related to these variables in patients with Crohn's disease. METHODS A descriptive cross sectional survey design was used. The 148 participants were the patients with Crohn's disease, recruited conveniently from one metropolitan hospital located in Seoul, Korea. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS Patients with severe illness activity reported significantly lower body images than those of the others. Education levels and working states affected self-esteem positively, while the number of operations and illness activity affected self-esteem negatively. Hospitalization and illness activity affected HRQOL negatively. Body image, self esteem, and HRQOL were positively correlated to each other with statistical significance. Illness activity was a common factor to affect body image, self esteem, and HRQOL. Body image was an influential factor on HRQOL as well as illness activity in patients with Crohn's disease. CONCLUSION As a result, this study suggested a necessity for developing an intervention study to lower the illness activity and heighten the body image among the patients with Crohn's disease.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the factors related to depression of elderly patients in geriatric hospitals. METHODS The subjects were 195 elderly patients who met the inclusion criteria of scores more than 18 on the K-MMSE score and no reported mental disease. The data were collected from February 20 to March 20, 2009. The research instruments utilized in this study were depression (GDSSF-K), activities of daily living and self esteem (RSES), social support, life satisfaction. Data were analyzed Pearson correlation and Multiple Stepwise Regression using SPSS 15.0. RESULTS Depression score were negatively correlation with ADL, social support, life satisfaction and self-esteem. Among the factors studied related to depression, life satisfaction had highest explanatory power of 36.5% and it was followed by physical health status and activity of daily living. These explained 43.7% of the depression. CONCLUSION The mean GDSSF-K 8.94, which indicates the higher than middle levels of depression. The findings suggest that it is important to develop educational programs to increase life satisfaction, physical health status and activity of daily living. Nursing interventions, including volunteer activities, health promotion program, and sports program could be useful in enhancing these factors.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of professional self-concept and self-efficacy on job satisfaction and to identify the relationship among them in clinical nurses. METHODS The subjects were nurses who were working for three general hospitals in Seoul and Gangwon province for two month starting in July 2007. Three questionnaires were used. One was job satisfaction and the others were professional self-concept and self-efficacy. The data were analyzed by SPSS/PC ver 12.0. RESULTS The mean score of job satisfaction was 2.99 (range: 1-5). The mean score of professional self-concept and self-efficacy were 2.71(range: 1-4) and 3.49(range: 1-5), respectively. Differences of job satisfaction were significantly related to differences in age, marital status, level of education, clinical career, annual salary, and shift pattern. With respect to job satisfaction, the pearson correlation coefficients were .43 for professional self-concept and .29 for self-efficacy. The multiple regression revealed that the significant predictor of job satisfaction was professional self-concept. CONCLUSION This study showed that a strong professional self-concept improves job satisfaction, so professional self-concept improvement programs should be developed to improve job satisfaction and to improve the quality of nursing.
The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship of professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction among nephrology nurses. The subject consisted of 84 nephrology nurses who work at 17 hospitals in Kwangju, Chonnam, Chonbuk and Cheju-do. The instrument of this study was a structured questionnaire on professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction. The data were collected from August 16 to September 10, 1999 and analyzed by Cronbach alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficient by using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of the research were as follows: 1. The average item scores were 2.73 for professional self-concept and 7.16 for self-efficacy. The average item score of job satisfaction was 3.05. Professional status (3.56) among the component factors of the job satisfaction had the highest value followed by the interaction(3.46), task requirements(3.28), autonomy(2.98), organizational requirement(2.70), and pay(2.22) was the lowest. 2. The relationship between general characteristics and professional self-concept shows a significant difference with regard to position and the nurses' intention to stay. The relationship between general characteristics and self-efficacy shows a significant difference with regard to position and shift. 3. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and self-efficacy (r=0.462, p<0.01) was found. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and job satisfaction(r=0.486, p<0.01) was found. In conclusion, professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nephrology nurses are significantly related. A professional self-concept is an important factor for job satisfaction of nephrology nurses. Therefore, this study suggested that we should develop programs and policies to increase the professional self-concept of nephrology nurses for their job satisfaction.
