Acceptance of Complementary and Alternative Therapy among Nurses: A Q-methodological Study
Ae Kyung Kim
Korean J Adult Nurs 2017;29(4):441-449.   Published online August 31, 2017
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7475/kjan.2017.29.4.441
PURPOSE
Perceptions of nurses regarding complementary and alternative therapies(CATs) acceptance illustrate how CATs can be applied in nursing practice and become the empirical basis for the expansion of nursing role. Purpose is to identify nurses' perception of CATs acceptance.
METHODS
A Q-methodological study, which allows for analysis of subjectivity of data, was used. A convenience P-sample was consisted of 36 nurses. Twenty-seven Q-statements were derived from a literature review and interviews with six nurses, and were then categorized on a normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the QUANAL PC Program.
RESULTS
Three types of perception regarding acceptance of CATs were identified among nurses. Type I was called the “cautious type”; Type II, the “positive acceptance type”; and Type III, the “considering reality type.” CONCLUSION: Along with further exploration of the scientific evidence of CATs, adequate nursing education, and finding ways to overcome the obstacles needed for acceptance of effective and empirically tested CATs into a nursing practice, the results of this study may help promoting application of CATs as a nursing practice.

Influence of the Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy on the Obesity Index of Middle-age Women
Chiyoung Cha
J Korean Acad Adult Nurs 2010;22(6):615-623.   Published online December 31, 2010
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy on middle-age women's obesity index.
METHODS
A total of 38 middle-age women were assigned to either a control or an intervention group. The intervention group received Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy three times a week for ten weeks. The two sample t-test was used to compare the body mass index, fat mass, and waist-to-hip ratio between the intervention (n=18) and the control group (n=20).
RESULTS
In both groups, body mass index did not change significantly following the intervention. The intervention group lost 1.00+/-1.10 kg of fat mass (p=.00) and the decrease was significant between the intervention and control group (p=.00). Both groups had increase in waist-to-hip ratio, however, the increase was only significant for the control group (p=.00).
CONCLUSION
The application of Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy influenced the change of fat mass, but not clinically significant. It may be useful to repeat the study and to examine other factors that may have interfered with the effectiveness of the intervention. The use of Koryo hand acupuncture therapy should be further studied.

Eun Joo Chae, Chun Gill Kim
J Korean Acad Adult Nurs 2008;20(3):418-430.   Published online June 30, 2008
PURPOSE
This study was to examine the effects of Seogeum therapy for middle-aged abdominal obese women. METHODS: Seogeum therapy combined cupping, stepping on ion aluminum board, adhering to Seoam moxibustion and Seoam pellet. The subjects consisted of 30 middle-aged abdominal obese women between 40 and 59 years of age: fifteen were assigned to experimental group, fifteen to control group. The data collection and treatments were performed from June to October, 2007. The subjects of experimental group participated in Seogeum therapy for 5 times per week during 8 weeks. The data were analyzed with Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test with SPSS/Window 12.0 program. RESULTS: Seogeum therapy experimental group showed significant difference in change of general obesity indexes(body weight, body fat amount, body fat ratio, BMI) than control group supporting hypothesis 1. Experimental group showed significant difference in change of abdominal obesity indexes(abdominal fat ratio, waist circumference, hip circumference) than control group supporting hypothesis 2. CONCLUSION: Obesity management of Seogeum therapy had a positive effect for middle-aged obese women. Therefore, it is concluded that the obesity management of Seogeum therapy can be applied as a nursing intervention to decrease the obesity for middle-aged women.
