Kyung Mi Kim, Jeong Sil Choi
Korean J Adult Nurs 2014;26(1):11-21.   Published online February 28, 2014
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7475/kjan.2014.26.1.11
PURPOSE
This study was conducted to describe core competencies and identify factors affecting core competencies among infection control nurses (ICN).
METHODS
Infection control nurses from hospital with more than 200 beds comprised the sample. Questionnaires were sent to the sample via e-mail. One hundred and three questionnaires were returned. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression via SPSS/WIN 21.0.
RESULTS
The core competency level of healthcare workers area was the highest that of the education and research was the lowest. There were significant differences in core competencies related to demographics such as age, clinical carrier, infection control carrier, position, academic degree, infection control specialist license, hospital location, and hospital type. The explained variances for the core competency were 38.3% and the contributing factors to core competencies were infection control carrier and infection control specialist license.
CONCLUSION
It showed various levels of core competencies depending on infection control nurses' demographics and hospital traits, therefore consistent management efforts for the licensing and career path of infection control would be required.

Sohyune Sok, Hyun Sook Kang, Won Ok Kim, Kyung Sun Hyun, Jia Lee, Sunhee Park
J Korean Acad Adult Nurs 2009;21(5):468-476.   Published online October 31, 2009

METHODS
Design was a randomized control group post-test design. The subjects were 102 senior nursing students(Experimental group: 48, Control group: 54) at K university in seoul, Korea. The experimental group took the clinical competency evaluation using standardized patients and the control group took the existing evaluation using a doll. The clinical competency and communication skills were measured by evaluators, and self-efficacy was self reported by the nursing students.

Effects of Self Concept on Clinical Competency in Hospital Nurses
Su Jeong Han
J Korean Acad Adult Nurs 2007;19(2):274-282.   Published online June 30, 2007
PURPOSE
This study was designed to identify the self concept and clinical competency of nurses in hospitals and to examine the relationship between two concepts.
METHODS
A questionnaire was used for data collection which was done from July 1 to July 30 in 2005. The respondents were 267 staff nurses in a university hospital and general hospitals in two cities. The instruments were Son's(2002) self concept scale and Lee's(2002) clinical competency scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression using SPSS-WIN.
RESULTS
The results of this study were summarized as follows: First, the total mean score of self concept was 2.56, and clinical competency was 2.59 on a 4 point scale. Second, the self concept and clinical competency were significantly correlated. Third, the results of multiple regression showed that self concept explained 45.2% of clinical competency.
CONCLUSION
Self concept has a strong influence on clinical competency. Therefore, individualized nursing management strategies and education programs must be developed in order to increase a nurses self concept.
